Graduate Teaching Program
Graduates Have Their Say ...

I do think the GTP provided systematic support for students in their teaching. It was comforting to know that the GTP was on every week of teaching. It provided a sense of support and a continual reminder that you weren't out there alone working under pressures that no-one else had ever encountered.

It provides a great source of support if you don't have much teaching experience and are feeling a bit isolated, confused or stressed. You get to meet some interesting people and have a chance to consider some important issues in a small group setting.

The student panel was excellent. They were very responsive.

I really looked forward to it each week and it gave me loads of great ideas and extra confidence for teaching.

Excellent peer support + great confidence builder.

I felt the balance of content was pretty much right.

Highly practical suggestions for improving classes - just enough theory/refs, not enough to be irritating or time consuming.

Brad was recently appointed to an academic position...

I'm not sure how you measure the success and worth of the GTP but from my point of view its value was enormous. Not only was I able to get sufficient experience and develop enough teaching skills to make myself competitive with international applicants, but as part of the selection process I had to give a demonstration seminar attended by the selection panel and if I hadn't done the GTP I would either have been too nervous to do anything, or I would have pitched the material at too advanced a level.

I felt that I had access to all the support I could possibly need. I was able to better evaluate my skills (and interest) in academic teaching and am now confident that my decision to continue with academic teaching is the correct choice for me.

Without the GTP my department would never have agreed to give me any teaching work. The GTP has led to them offering me more teaching for next semester.

If you are doing the GTP you avoid leaping into your first academic teaching experiences feeling unsupported and anxious that you'll make an idiot of yourself. The program is structured so that problems likely to crop up first in one's teaching are covered early in the seminars.

The program was both stimulating and worthwhile to any tutor teaching. The GTP offers a great opportunity to share experiences and in a few cases offer solutions or different impressions to problems.

A good opportunity to discuss problems inherent in the course structure and organisation which could not otherwise be done in front of fellow tutors and lecturers from the same course.

I shall encourage others to take the course.

The GTP provides a good opportunity for developing tutoring skills and discussion of problems with other tutors which otherwise would not happen on a regular basis.
